The Directorate of Traffic Police is still conducting thorough investigations into the car crash that claimed the life of Rajiv Ruparelia.
The 35-year-old died when his vehicle crashed, overturned, and caught fire at the Busabala flyover early on Saturday morning. Social media videos and images showed the vehicle was completely burned beyond recognition.
Rajiv Ruparelia’s death sparked public outrage over the haphazard placement of temporary barriers at road construction sites, raising concerns about oversight and safety enforcement.
Preliminary findings suggested the vehicle collided with temporary pavements at the roundabout section of the newly constructed flyover in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District.
Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura stated at a press briefing at Naguru Police Headquarters that the directorate is still conducting thorough investigations to determine the clear cause of the crash.
According to the Traffic Police, investigations into fatal accidents typically involve examining factors such as driver behavior (including speeding, reckless driving, and distracted driving), vehicle condition, road conditions, and road design among others.
“We don’t want to speculate about it because it’s still conditional on what the circumstances were that led to the accident. We’ll be releasing information to the public once the investigations are done,” Kananura said.
Kananura noted that the investigations would be thorough and potentially time-consuming, ensuring no detail is overlooked. He also dismissed circulating CCTV video purporting to show the deceased driving recklessly.
According to Traffic Police records, Rajiv’s death brought to 15 the number of people who have died in road accidents across the country in the past week. In a separate incident, five people died and several others were seriously injured in a crash along the Tirinyi-Kampala road.
On Monday, unspecified number of people died after a bus belonging to YY Bus Company overturned in Buikwe District.
Kananura noted that high-speed driving and careless overtaking remain major contributors to accidents. “Driving high speed, careless overtaking are still the main problem in these accidents, since from last year’s report, people drive recklessly, and overtaking in dangerous place, we call upon our motorists that they should always take care and precaution while on the road.
