The road was cut off following heavy rains that poured for the greater part of the day causing the banks of river Nabiyonga to burst submerging the bridge and several households.
Kadimba Hussein, the Assistant RCC of Mbale city said no fatalities and injuries were registered by press time but explained that one vehicles was swept away by the floods.
“As you see the situation we are in, it reminds us of the same situation that happened 2 years ago where lives were lost at the same bridge, what has helped us is that this time is that it happened during day time so we haven’t registered any loss of lives,” he said. Kadimba urged the government and city planners to prioritise enlarging the Nabiyonga bridge in order to avoid future disasters.
Annet Senga and Mujasi Bowas both local residents expressed their frustrations that the government has not found a solution to what appears like like a perennial crisis.
This is not the first time the above road section is getting flooded. In July 2022, flooding in the same area left over 29 road users dead. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
