Pascal Amuriat, the former chairperson of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) in Soroti City, has announced his decision to step down from party activities. Amuriat, who previously contested for the Soroti City parliamentary seat in 2021 and became the party’s flag bearer for the Soroti City East by-election in June 2022, cited several concerns as reasons for his departure from the party.
Reflecting on his 11-year tenure, Amuriat expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s lack of direction and clear obligations. “I have served in the party for 11 years, but the party does not represent the views of the people we serve; it is more focused on its issues,” he stated.
He also criticized the Central Executive Committee for its failure to hold regular meetings, stating, “We have never convened for any meetings from time immemorial to discuss the progress of the party or its future direction.”
Amuriat also pointed to his accomplishments as the chairperson of Soroti City, including his efforts in mobilizing resources to establish a UPC office in the city. Despite his efforts, he expressed frustration with the party’s internal dynamics.
When asked about his plans, Amuriat clarified that he currently has no affiliation with any political party. However, he did leave the door open for future political engagement, stating that he would declare his interests should the opportunity arise-URN.
