Ethiopian Airlines has firmed up options for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, converting commitments from its 2023 order into confirmed aircraft.
The additional 787-9s will support long-haul network growth out of Addis Ababa, adding lift on intercontinental sectors and increasing available belly cargo capacity on key trade lanes.
Group CEO Mesfin Tasew says the conversion strengthens the airline’s fleet plan and supports continued expansion with modern widebody aircraft. He notes the 787-9 will help sustain operating efficiency while maintaining passenger comfort across the network.
Ethiopian Airlines remains the largest 787 operator in Africa, deploying both the 787-8 and 787-9 across intercontinental routes linking Addis Ababa to Europe, Asia and North America, alongside high-demand intra-African services.
Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, says the 787 continues to anchor Ethiopian’s widebody fleet as the airline adds capacity, opens new city pairs and scales operations.
The 787-9’s range and fuel efficiency allow Ethiopian to operate long sectors with lower unit costs, while its cargo hold supports belly freight on high-yield routes.
