Rwenzori West Bishop Urges NRM to Let Voters Decide in Bundibugyo

The Bishop of Rwenzori West, Barnabas Tibaijuka, has called on political aspirants and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Electoral Commission to allow party voters to decide who should hold the party flags.

He notes that they are yet to discover whether it is political campaigns that destabilize Bundibugyo District’s population or something else, observing that in periods before election seasons, the population is largely peaceful.

On Tuesday, NRM party members will take part in the election of the NRM LCI flag-bearer for chairmanship, as well as elect village NRM structures. Bundibugyo District, predominantly an NRM area, has been an epicenter of electoral violence.

In 2016, 12 people were reportedly killed and over 10 houses set ablaze in post-election violence after NRM’s candidate Ronald Mutegeki was declared the winner of a hotly-contested LCV chairman race against independent candidate and incumbent Jolly Tibamanya.

The bishop notes that political tensions are often sparked during party primaries, where the party’s Electoral Commission is suspected of interfering with voting outcomes. He appeals to the aspirants to share what they intend to do for the people rather than create disunity for political gains.

Bishop Tibaijuka said chaos has no space in Bundibugyo this season, noting that as the church, they will openly speak against any aspirant or candidate who intends to disrupt the electoral process-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
