Rukungiri District Allocates Major Education Funding to Upgrade Over 30 Schools in 2026/27 Budget

Rukungiri District Local Government has earmarked significant funding to rehabilitate and support more than 30 primary and secondary schools in the 2026/2027 financial year, as part of efforts to improve education infrastructure across the district.

According to the approved budget seen by our reporter, the district council passed a total budget of UGX 69.1 billion, with the education sector receiving the largest share amounting to UGX 36,103,942,009.

The wage component of the budget stands at UGX 41.1 billion, which will mainly cater for salaries in the education, health, agricultural extension and skills development sectors. Non-wage recurrent expenditure is estimated at UGX 21.4 billion, while UGX 6.5 billion has been allocated for development projects.

Under the education sector, UGX 1.25 billion from the Transitional Development Grant has been set aside for key construction and rehabilitation works. Rweshama Primary School in Ruhinda will receive UGX 100 million for the construction of two classrooms, while Kakindo Primary School and Omuburama Primary School will each receive UGX 150 million for construction of three classrooms.

St Peters Secondary School Nyarushanje has been allocated UGX 500 million for reconstruction, while Bikurungu Centenary Primary School will receive UGX 200 million for construction and rehabilitation. Buyanja Sub-county headquarters will also receive UGX 100 million for completion.

Additional works will include the construction of two classrooms and an office at St Williams Secondary School Rwengiri at a cost of UGX 100 million, remodeling of three classrooms at Munyeganyegye Primary School at UGX 100 million, and completion of four classroom blocks at Bikungu Primary School at UGX 120 million under DDEG. Rwabukoba Secondary School will also benefit from reroofing of five classrooms using a maintenance grant.

Further planned projects under the education department include completion of a three-classroom block at Ibanda Primary School, renovation of classrooms at Rwenshama Public Primary School, Ngoma Primary School and Rwengiri Primary School, and completion of classroom blocks at Nyamihuku Primary School, Kyaruyenje Primary School, Kigiro Primary School, Katobotobo Primary School and Ihimbo Primary School. Rugarama Primary School will benefit from completion and distribution of furniture.

The district will also distribute furniture to several schools including Ihimbo Primary School, Karuhembe Primary School, Nyakishenyi Primary School, Musyana Primary School, Rwemiringa Primary School, Nyakanyinya Primary School, Kagarogoro Primary School and Kirama Primary School.

In addition, VIP latrines will be constructed at Bwambara Primary School, Burombe Primary School, Kyamurari Primary School, Kebisoni Integrated Primary School, Rubanga Primary School, Kibirizi Primary School, Katunga Primary School and Kahengye Primary School.

According to the authorities, the above projects will be subjected to the Bills of Quantities (BOQs) from Engineering Department, ranking by the Education Department and the availability of funds. District leaders say the planned investments are aimed at improving learning conditions, reducing classroom congestion and enhancing sanitation in schools across Rukungiri-URN.
