According to preliminary police findings, the incident happened on May 3, 2026, in Mugabe Village, Bukana Sub-county, Namayingo District. Investigators say Akadoi had gone to work in the garden with two other grandchildren, leaving the eight-year-old at home. During her absence, the child allegedly ate five pieces of pasted fish that had been prepared for the family meal.
On returning home, Akadoi reportedly questioned the child, who initially denied eating the fish and instead claimed to have given it to friends who had visited the home. Police say the response angered Akadoi, who allegedly beat the child before wrapping her in dry banana leaves and setting them on fire outside the house using a matchstick.
The child reportedly escaped and ran to a neighbour’s home, where residents poured water on her before rushing her to a nearby private clinic for first aid. Due to serious burns around the stomach area, she was later referred to Buyinja Health Centre IV for further treatment. Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the incident and said the suspect is expected to face charges of child neglect, child abuse, and inflicting grievous harm on a child.
Kasadha appealed to members of the public to protect children and avoid subjecting them to violence and abuse. Akadoi is reported to have admitted to the act during police investigations, saying she acted out of anger and did not intend to seriously harm the child. She also reportedly expressed remorse, noting that she has been raising the grandchildren alone following the death of their parents-URN.
