Police in Oyam District have launched investigations into the fatal shooting of a civilian and the lynching of two police officers by a mob. Reports obtained by Uganda Radio Network (URN) indicate that on May 18, 2025, at around 6:24 PM, police officers attached to Ngai Sub-County Police Station shot dead Ojok Nelson Omoding, a resident of Tecik Village.

In retaliation, an angry mob descended on the officers and beat two of them to death. It is alleged that Police Constables Ojok Herick, Aguta Robert (No. 38445), and Naturinda John Bosco (No. 76427), all attached to Ngai Police Station, had officially booked out to arrest Okwir Ambrose — a suspect in the theft of motorcycle registration number UDY 645Q.

The theft had earlier been reported by Ogwang Justine. Two suspects, Ongiro Joshua and Obong Jolly, had already been arrested and reportedly identified Okwir as the ringleader and the individual in possession of the stolen motorcycle. During the attempted arrest, it is alleged that Ojok Nelson Omoding and others attempted to disarm the officers.

In the struggle, they removed the magazine from one of the rifles, unaware it had already been cocked. A bullet was discharged, fatally injuring Ojok Nelson, who died shortly after being taken to a nearby clinic. In response, the mob turned violent and attacked the officers. Constable Naturinda John Bosco reportedly sought refuge at the home of the LC1 Chairman, Ameny Nixon, but was handed over to the mob and killed on the spot.

The two remaining officers fled in different directions and were later rescued with injuries. They are currently receiving treatment at Anyeke Health Centre IV. The mob allegedly proceeded to Ngai Police Station, where they vandalized property — including case files, communication equipment, and windows — and forcefully released detainees from the cells. Among those who escaped were the two suspects involved in the motorcycle theft and one Ocen Michael, who had been charged with obtaining money by pretense.

The bodies of the deceased officer and civilian had been taken to Anyeke Health Centre IV for postmortem examinations by the time of publishing this story. Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, said the officer’s firearm, Rifle No. UG POL 565835910-33087 was recovered, although the magazine with 29 rounds of ammunition was missing. He confirmed that a murder case has been registered and investigations are underway. About 15 key suspects have been identified, and arrests are ongoing.
