Police in the Kiira region are investigating the death of 15-year-old Collins Lyagoba, a Primary Five pupil at Wansimba Catholic Primary School in Butagaya Sub-county, Jinja District. It is reported that Lyagoba developed misunderstandings with his 14-year-old classmate, which escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, the younger boy allegedly punched Lyagoba in the neck, causing him to fall to the ground.

David Nadiope, the classroom teacher, said he had conducted the evening lesson and written a review exercise on the chalkboard for pupils to copy before stepping out to drink water in the staffroom. “While in the staffroom, which is about five meters from the classroom, two girls came running and shouting that some boys were fighting fiercely,” Nadiope recounted.

He said he rushed back to the classroom and called the two boys to the front, but only the 14-year-old stood up, while Lyagoba remained motionless. Nadiope said he mobilized pupils to carry Lyagoba to the staffroom for first aid, but it was too late. “We realized he was already dead, and there was nothing clinically possible to save his life,” he said.

He immediately informed the school headteacher, George Waibi, who then notified police about the incident. Waibi said the tragedy has sent shockwaves through the school community. “We are working with different stakeholders to restore hope among the learners,” he noted.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the incident, saying the deceased’s body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Mubi also confirmed the arrest of the 14-year-old suspect, who is currently detained at Buwenge Central Police Station. He added that investigations are ongoing and that a detailed report on the incident will be released to the public soon.
