At least 24 schools in Oyam District have received 585.5 billion shillings for infrastructural development. The money will cater for the construction of new classrooms, waterborne toilet facilities, construction of staff houses.
Among the schools to benefit from the project are Minakulu Primary School, Dr. Oryang Secondary School, Abdullah Anyuru and Atapara Senior Secondary School, among other schools in the district.
The five-year project dubbed “Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Facility Project funded by the European Union, focuses on building new classrooms, staff houses to enhance learning environments and encourage students to remain in school.
Launching the project at Minakulu Primary School, Sinandugu Silvaster, from the Ministry of Water and Environment, says the project will support 199 schools across the country, with 24 schools in Oyam District.
Benson Walter Dila Oyuku, Oyam District LCV Chairman, commended the project and its implementing partners, saying it will go a long way to complement government efforts. He called for accountability and value for money from bidders, urging schools to ensure the proper maintenance of all newly developed infrastructures.
Similarly, Oyam’s Resident District Commissioner, Shilaku James, lauded the European Union and the Ministry of Water & Environment for spearheading the project.
Charles Chong, Minakulu Primary School Parents Teachers’ Association Chairperson, welcomed the project with excitement. He noted that many girls had already dropped out due to the lack of essential changing rooms and other sanitation facilities.
