Oyam District leaders have urged the contractor to prioritize community safety and integrity throughout the implementation of the UGX 3.18 billion Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure project. The nine-month project, funded by the European Union and managed by the Ministry of Water and Environment through the Water and Sanitation Development Facility – North, was awarded to Kejatu Quality Services Ltd to construct classrooms, dormitories, staff houses, toilets, and girls’ changing rooms in seven schools under Lot B.
The benefiting schools include Abdullah Anyuru Memorial College, Minakulu Primary School, Dr. Oryang Secondary School, Adel Primary School, Atapara Secondary School, Atapara West Primary School, and Amati Primary School. Speaking during the project site handover, Deputy RDC of Oyam, Francis Behangana, warned the contractor’s team against inappropriate conduct, particularly seducing students and married women. He stressed that any misconduct would be met with legal consequences.
Similarly, Oyam district Vice Chairperson, Christ Ongom, cautioned Kejatu Quality Services Ltd against diverting funds meant for this project to other districts. He warned that such financial indiscipline often leads to delays and compromises the integrity of the entire contract.
Brian Ogutu, the LC5 Councilor for Aber Sub-County, who also serves as secretary for Work and Technical Services at Oyam district local government, encouraged the contractor to hire local labor and source materials within Oyam to stimulate the district’s economy.
In response, James Olwal, director of Kejatu Quality Services Ltd, pledged to complete the project responsibly, ensuring that no harm comes to learners or the surrounding communities.
