A notorious Northern Bypass thug, Gideo Matwa, has been arrested by Kira Road police. This is after one of his latest victims, John Iraphasa, trailed him up to his hideout.
Matwa has been reported by more than 10 people in the recent past for attacking them along the Northern Bypass, mostly at Kiwatule and Metroplex Naalya.
Matwa, who is aged 35, is a resident of Kazinga Zone, Kiwatule Parish, Nakawa Division, in Kampala District. According to Iraphasa, he was attacked at Lower Kazinga, Kiwatule, and when he tried to pursue the culprit, he jumped into a nearby stream.
“He attacked me near the Fish pond, in the Kazinga zone. He waited for me near the gate and pounced on me. He robbed me of my smartphone. I managed to follow him until he dived into a nearby stream,” Iraphasa told police.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said Iraphasa quickly informed police, who responded promptly with the help of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers deployed along Northern Bypass.
“Matwa was arrested from the stream. Our security team recovered two smartphones from the suspect. Matwa Gideon has confessed to operating in the areas of Northern Bypass, Lower Kazinga, and Metroplex in Naalya,” Onyango said.
Matwa informed police that he has attacked more than 10 people in the past few weeks and robbed them of, among other items, smartphones, wallets containing money, and also broke into houses and shops.
“I am the one who also punched a woman at Metroplex and robbed her of a smartphone and a bag containing money. The smartphones I have stolen are expensive ones. For instance, the two I have are valued more than 1.5 million shillings,” Matwa confessed at Kira Road during interrogation.
Kira Road has established that Matwa has a previous record of burglary and theft in Lower Kazinga. The suspect is currently detained at Kiwatule Police Station pending arraignment in court. Onyango has called upon victims of Matwa’s criminal acts to come out and provide more information that would be helpful during prosecution.
Matwa’s arrest comes on the heels of an ongoing hunt for thugs by the Directorate of Crime Intelligence (DCI) after a Scottish national was attacked and robbed of a smartphone valued at 7 million shillings.
The security operations with the help of CCTV cameras arrested a thug only identified as Kirengwe, who has since revealed the names of six other thugs he works with. Some of the thugs revealed by Kirengwe and are currently being hunted by DCI include Kitto, Santosi, Ali and Segawa-URN.
