Leaders across the Sebei sub-region have joined members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in mourning the death of their coordinator, Kalifani Chemutai, who died following a fatal road accident in Kenya.
Chemutai, a NUP mobiliser and the former parliamentary aspirant in Kapchorwa Municipality, reportedly lost his life on the night of April 29, 2026, in Endebess area, Trans Nzoia County, while riding a motorcycle towards the Suam border point into Uganda.
According to Caleb Noah Cherotich, the NUP coordinator for Sebei sub-region, the deceased had travelled to Kenya to visit his sister before the tragic incident occurred.He explained that Chemutai had briefly crossed into Kenya on a personal visit before attempting to return home.
Cherotich added that along the way, Chemutai realised he had forgotten important travel documents, prompting him to turn back, an action that tragically led to the accident under unclear circumstances.
Cherotich further described the deceased as a committed mobiliser who had played a significant role in strengthening party structures across Sebei. He noted that Chemutai had been actively involved in grassroots mobilisation and political organisation.
He added that his death is a major setback to the party, especially at a time when efforts to consolidate support in the region are ongoing. “This is a big loss to us,” he added.
Family members have since travelled to Kenya to follow up on the matter and coordinate the repatriation of the body back to Uganda. Fred Chebet, the chairperson of the clan, said the body is currently lying at Kitale Mortuary pending a postmortem examination and completion of legal procedures. He noted that the family is working closely with Kenyan authorities in to ensure the body brought back to his home in Kapchorwa district.
Meanwhile, leaders in Sebei have eulogised Chemutai as a dedicated leader and mobiliser whose efforts greatly impacted the region’s political landscape.
Vincent Chelimo, the LCV Chairperson-elect for Kapchorwa District, described Chemutai as a focused and determined young leader who was passionate about serving his community. He noted that the deceased had invested his time in mobilising young people and advocating for development in the area.
Chelimo added that Chemutai’s leadership qualities and commitment to grassroots engagement made him stand out among his peers in the region.“Chemutai was a promising leader who had dedicated his time to mobilising and empowering the youth in Sebei. His death is a big setback to the region,” Chelimo said.
Phyllis Chemutai, the Woman Member of Parliament for Kapchorwa District, said the deceased was instrumental in strengthening grassroots political participation in the area. She noted that his efforts had inspired many young people to take an active role in leadership and community affairs.
She says his absence will leave a noticeable gap, especially among the youth he mentored and worked with closely. “He was very active at the community level and inspired many young people to take part in leadership whose loss will be deeply felt,” she noted.
Peter Kiti, the Member of Parliament for Tingey County in Bukwo District, described Chemutai as a resilient mobiliser who worked tirelessly to build political awareness among the people of his party. He said the deceased believed in inclusive leadership and continuously engaged communities on governance issues.
Kiti added that Chemutai’s commitment to ensuring that the voices of Sebei residents were represented will be remembered for years to come. “He believed in inclusive leadership and worked hard to ensure that voices from Sebei were heard,” Kiti said.
Paul Majinja Kapchemaiko, the LCV Chairperson-elect for Kween District, said Chemutai’s death has left a significant gap in the region’s leadership Checks and Balance structures. He noted that the deceased was known for bringing people together and fostering unity across political divides.
“This is a painful loss to Sebei. He was a unifying figure who brought people together for a common cause,” Majinja said.
Chemutai’s death comes shortly after the passing of another prominent NUP member, MP Nakimuli, adding to the party’s recent losses. More details regarding burial arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family.
