The Kotido Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Charles Ichogor, has emphasized the importance of training and sensitizing women to adopt biogas methods for cooking. According to Ichogor, this initiative aims to address the recent surge in firewood cutting for cooking, which has contributed to environmental degradation and conservation challenges.
Ichogor explains that by adopting biogas technology and using briquettes, women can reduce their reliance on firewood and charcoal, helping to mitigate the impact of deforestation. He now urges development partners to take the lead in training women on environmentally friendly methods, including the use of biogas as well as manufacturing and using briquettes made from organic waste such as cow dung, mixed with adhesives.
Additionally, RDC Ichogor has called for the provision of tree seedlings, particularly fruit trees, by development partners. He believes this will not only provide a sustainable source of fruit but also help address the community’s nutritional challenges. Ichogor argues that promoting biogas technology and tree planting will enable the community to work towards a more environmentally conscious future.
Ichogor also called for the involvement of children by parents and all stakeholders in environmental conservation. He stated that if children grow up with a positive mindset about the dangers of environmental destruction, they will work to preserve the environment.
Jessica Ataa, the Executive Director of Nakere Rural Women Activist-NARWOA, also highlighted the benefits of planting Kay apples as a live fence. She believes this approach can help control the rampant felling of trees used for fencing materials, offering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative.
These initiatives proposed by RDC Ichogor and Jessica Ataa demonstrate a commitment to finding innovative solutions to environmental conservation and sustainability challenges in Kotido, where women have been at the forefront of felling trees, which are commonly used for constructing wood fences, charcoal burning, and firewood for cooking-URN.
