In bid to providing farmers with affordable and accessible irrigation solutions for their crops, the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, through the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers Program (UgIFT), has delivered a consignment of 10 micro-scale irrigation kits valued at Shs191.5 million to the Kapelebyong District Local Government.

These kits, which include solar panels, water tanks, and pipes, will soon be distributed and set up at the farms of nine participating farmers who contributed eco funding of 25 percent of the costs as government contributes 75 %.

Emmanuel Opio, the Kapelebyong District Communications Officer, stated that once the micro-scale irrigation kits are installed, they will significantly help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change that local farmer face, leading to enhanced and improved production of commercial crops.

According to him, one kit will remain at the district for use by the field team used as demo. He expressed optimism that this irrigation initiative will enhance the economic standards of the residents in a district frequently affected by prolonged dry spells.

The UgIFT program is designed to enhance the adequacy and fairness of fiscal transfers while improving the financial management of resources by Local Governments, particularly for health and education services.

Micro-scale irrigation kits are designed for small-scale farming, providing farmers with affordable and accessible irrigation solutions for their crops.

These kits typically include essential components like pumps, hoses, and sometimes solar panels for energy.

The kits are often part of government programs like the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer (UgIFT) program, which aims to support smallholder farmers in transitioning from subsistence to commercial agriculture-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
