The police in Albertine are investigating the circumstances under which a police trainer attached to Kabalye police training school in Masindi allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself.
The deceased has been identified as James Tembo, 29, an instructor at Kabalye police training school. The incident happened on Wednesday at around 2:30 p.m. within the training school in Masindi district.
Police reports reveal that police constable Francis Onek entrusted Tembo with his gun. However, a few minutes after he handed over his gun, Tembo reportedly used the gun to end his life.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, says it is not yet clear why Tembo decided to end his life. He says that the gun with 28 live ammunition has been recovered and exhibited.
According to Hakiza, they have apprehended Onek to help them with investigations.
He says plans are underway to transport the deceased’s body to his home district in Kasese.
On Easter Monday, a police officer attached to Hoima Central police station was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a civilian.
The police officer was identified as Reuben Kwihangana, while the deceased was identified as Mawala Mawejje, a boda boda rider and a resident of Rukoge cell in Hoima West division of Hoima city.
The shooting incident happened on Sunday at around 10 p.m. at Lusaka Middle cell in Hoima city. The police officer, while riding a motorcycle, collided head-on with the boda boda rider in Hoima city.
After colliding, a scuffle ensued between the duo, with the police officer accusing the boda boda rider of riding carelessly.
He reportedly pulled out a pistol and shot Mawejje on the head, killing him instantly. He later fled to an unknown destination.
Last week, the police in Masindi arrested Corporal Aggrey Byamugisha, a Uganda People’s Defence Forces soldier attached to Masindi Army Barracks, for allegedly shooting and killing a civilian.
The deceased, identified only as Mugisha, was a hawker and a resident of Masindi town.
