The Intergovernmental Authority on Development -IGAD has launched a project aimed at empowering women for climate resilience and addressing gender vulnerability in climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts.
The project, dubbed “Enabling Gender Equality in Access to Land Resources for Climate Change Adaptation in the IGAD Region,” is being implemented in Kotido Municipality, as well as Mandera County in Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia.
According to Joselyne Bigirwa, the team Leader of IGAD Uganda, the project seeks to promote gender equality in access to land resources, a critical aspect of climate change adaptation. Bigirwa says the initiative has already begun to bear fruit, with the distribution of 5,000 fruit, ornamental, and commercial tree seedlings to 7 primary schools, 2 secondary schools, and 1 technical college.
In addition to the tree seedlings, 100 selected women within the municipality have also received essential tools, including 100 hoes, watering cans, cooking stoves, and wheelbarrows. Furthermore, 10 water tanks with a 10,000-liter capacity have also been stationed in communities lacking water storage facilities to support the sustainability of the trees.
Kotido Municipality Mayor urged women and pupils to support the initiatives and ensure the trees’ survival.
Emile Bela, the Africa Climate Change Fund representative under the African Development Bank, commended the community’s commitment to the project, stating that it is a testament to the trees’ survival.
Ichogor Charles, the Kotido District RDC, also expressed his support for the project, stating that he will engage district leaders to ensure that the project’s components are replicated and spread throughout the district. //Cue in: “Environment officer-URN.
