Security forces have arrested four suspects in the armed robbery and murder of Kikandwa businessman Herman Kiyaga, who was killed barely ten days ago. Kiyaga, who owned mobile money and wholesale shops in Kikandwa, Wakiso district, was attacked by armed men at around 8 pm.
The deceased was in the shop with one of his wives when the thugs, who appeared to have done enough reconnaissance, struck as he counted the day’s sales. CCTV camera footage captured the men demanding money in Luganda as the wife pleaded for mercy.
The wife threw some money at the attackers, but they kept demanding more while firing bullets. Gerald Muyingo, one of the suspects and the alleged shooter, told police and the military during interrogations on Wednesday that their mission was not to kill Kiyaga.
“We came here on the orders of our boss who said they had a lot of money and often count it in the evening hours. My mission was to fire bullets scaring them and nearby people. But he was killed by mistake,” Muyingo, aged 28, said. Police and the army later took the suspects for a scene reconstruction, where Muyingo showed where he had first hidden the gun after the robbery. Out of the four suspects, two are Bodaboda riders who were meant to facilitate the escape.
Ironically, one of the robbers was accidentally wounded by Muyingo’s bullets during the scuffle. “In the scuffle to scare the business operators to give us money, one of our colleagues was also shot. He had arrived earlier pretending to be a client. He is the one who revealed information which has led to our arrest,” Muyingo said.
Other suspects have been identified as Ivan and Kayibanda. Kakiri Division Police Commander, SP Gerald Abasa, urged residents to cooperate with security agencies in reporting criminals. “The police is yours. The military is yours. We are all here and mandated to protect you. Your role is to alert us about the criminals terrorizing you. We promised you that we would arrest these robbers and we have them all,” SP Abasa said. Kiyaga’s murder came just three days after Kasangati businessman Deo Bwanika was also killed in a similar evening attack as he counted sales. Last Sunday, another businessman, Anthony Mutinisa, was gunned down by his personal assistant and private security guard, Hillary Byaruhanga, who fled with his new Land Cruiser V8. Byaruhanga, who worked for Don World Security Company, was later arrested in Kanungu district while attempting to flee to the Democratic Republic of Congo with an accomplice, Mark Akampa.
