Forty-seven people, including 31 students and 16 adults, were evacuated and admitted at Kamuli General Hospital following a road crash involving a school bus and a stationary sugarcane truck in Busota Trading Centre along the Jinja-Kamuli Road.
The accident occurred at about 9:00pm as students of Nalango Senior Secondary School were returning from a study trip to Ssezibwa Falls in Buikwe District.
According to Moses Lyagoba, the emergency response team leader in Kamuli District, all the casualties are receiving treatment at the hospital’s emergency ward.
Lyagoba said three of the victims are in critical but stable condition, while 21 others sustained serious injuries but are responding to treatment. Another 23 casualties sustained injuries but are able to move without additional support.
He said the timely evacuation was made possible after the district deployed three ambulances, a police pickup truck and other vehicles from the Kamuli District Health Department to transport the injured from the scene.
Lyagoba added that emergency responders from different health facilities also supported the response by helping to provide immediate medical attention.
Meanwhile, Busoga North Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said police are working with medical teams to ensure all the injured victims receive the necessary care.
Lubega said preliminary findings indicate that the bus driver attempted to overtake at a narrow section of the road before losing control and crashing into the stationary sugarcane truck.
He added that the drivers of both the school bus and the sugarcane truck have since fled and are believed to be hiding, as police continue investigations into the cause of the crash-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
