Candidates from 15 primary schools in West Nile are receiving additional assessments, revision sessions and academic support under an initiative aimed at improving their performance in this year’s Primary Leaving Examination (PLE). The initiative, supported by West Nile Rural Electrification Company (WENRECo), covers schools in Arua, Maracha, Terego, Koboko and Zombo districts, with three participating schools from each district.

The programme involves regular joint assessments, revision sessions and teacher capacity-building activities, including training in curriculum interpretation to strengthen teaching and learning. WENRECo Communication and Public Relations Officer Ayot Lillian said the initiative, now in its third edition, was designed to better prepare candidates for the national examinations.

Ayot said the programme forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts, with quality education identified as a key priority in supporting West Nile’s development.

Since the beginning of the first term of the 2026 academic year, candidates from the 15 schools have participated in joint assessments, revision sessions and conferences in preparation for the examinations.

The activities have included a week-long programme at Springs Primary School in Arua City, where top-performing candidates from the participating schools met for discussions, revision lessons and peer learning following the latest joint assessment.

Andezuyo Brenda Winnie, a candidate at Ariwa Primary School in Terego District, expressed confidence that she would perform well in the forthcoming examinations, saying the regular assessments had helped prepare her.

WENRECo contracted West Nile Education Solution to implement the initiative across the five districts. The organisation is responsible for conducting assessments, training teachers, supervising programme activities and researching challenges affecting performance to develop improvement plans.

The organisation’s founder, Geoffrey Etoma, said one of the main challenges facing candidates was difficulty interpreting examination questions and instructions. Etoma said regular engagements with learners had helped address the problem, urging candidates to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from facilitators as they prepared for the examinations.

The WENRECo Education Initiative was launched in 2024 as a pilot involving three schools in Maracha District: Yivu, Oluvu and Oleba primary schools. In 2025, the programme was expanded to five districts, with three schools selected from each based on their average performance and with technical guidance from the respective District Education Officers.

Several schools in West Nile continue to face challenges, including incomplete syllabus coverage, difficulties interpreting examination questions, and inappropriate approaches to answering them, which can affect candidates’ performance. Nationally, 920,796 candidates have registered for this year’s PLE. Of these, 436,192 are boys, and 484,604 are girls.According to the timetable released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), candidates will be briefed on Friday, October 30, before the written examinations begin-URN.
