Two suspected Karamojong warriors voluntarily surrendered one SMG rifle and ammunition to joint security forces in Nakapiripirit on May 13th,  2026, according to the police. ‎Michael Loke and Luke Lokol, both residents of Nakuyon Village in Namalu Sub-county, handed over the firearm after being arrested during an intelligence-led operation on May 4th, 2026.‎

Officials said the duo admitted to owning a firearm and agreed to surrender it voluntarily to secure their release from military custody.‎ Mt, Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the incident. He said the two suspects were released under the President’s amnesty window for warriors who choose to give up illegal firearms.

‎“The release follows the ongoing amnesty program offered to warriors who want to voluntarily surrender guns,” Longole said. ‎Longole commended members of the public for embracing voluntary disarmament and urged others still holding illegal firearms to surrender them.

‎“Voluntary surrender is peaceful and saves lives. I want to urge you whoever is still keeping them to use this opportunity rather than waiting for our enforcement that comes with repercussions,” he warned.‎ The amnesty program is part of the ongoing efforts to reduce illegal gun possession and improve security in the Karamoja region-URN.
