Two suspected Karamojong warriors voluntarily surrendered one SMG rifle and ammunition to joint security forces in Nakapiripirit on May 13th, 2026, according to the police. Michael Loke and Luke Lokol, both residents of Nakuyon Village in Namalu Sub-county, handed over the firearm after being arrested during an intelligence-led operation on May 4th, 2026.
Officials said the duo admitted to owning a firearm and agreed to surrender it voluntarily to secure their release from military custody. Mt, Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the incident. He said the two suspects were released under the President’s amnesty window for warriors who choose to give up illegal firearms.
“The release follows the ongoing amnesty program offered to warriors who want to voluntarily surrender guns,” Longole said. Longole commended members of the public for embracing voluntary disarmament and urged others still holding illegal firearms to surrender them.
“Voluntary surrender is peaceful and saves lives. I want to urge you whoever is still keeping them to use this opportunity rather than waiting for our enforcement that comes with repercussions,” he warned. The amnesty program is part of the ongoing efforts to reduce illegal gun possession and improve security in the Karamoja region-URN.
