Two sub-machine guns (SMGs) have been recovered and two suspects arrested in an intelligence-led security operation in Tapac Sub-county, Moroto District, as joint security forces intensify efforts to remove illegal firearms from communities.

The operation was conducted at about 1:00 pm on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Nakwanga Parish by a joint intelligence team supported by uniformed officers from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The suspects were identified as Lokolimoi Lokomolo, a resident of Didi Village, and Loyomo Lokorilem, from Mutya Village.

According to security, Lokolimoi was found in possession of an SMG rifle numbered 15004, while Loyomo was arrested with another SMG bearing serial number 08897. Neither firearm had ammunition at the time of recovery. Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and recovery of the two firearms.

He commended the intelligence teams and residents for their continued cooperation in efforts to identify and recover illegal weapons in the region. “We reiterate our warning to all illegal gun holders to voluntarily surrender their weapons, as operations to recover illegal firearms have been intensified,” Longole said.

The arrests form part of ongoing joint security operations in the wider Karamoja region aimed at recovering illegal firearms and curbing their use in cattle raids and other violent crimes-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
