The joint security forces in Nabilatuk District have arrested two suspects for exaggerating the number of stolen cattle, undermining efforts to recover livestock in the region. Joseph Dengel and Moses Lala, residents of Nayoroit and Cucu villages respectively, were arrested on Sunday afternoon after falsely reporting that 90 cattle had been stolen from Lodamacha village in Kosike Sub-County.
Mike Longole, Mt. Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, said the duo had inflated the actual number of stolen cattle from 20 to 90. He explained that exaggeration of livestock theft is a longstanding problem that hampers recovery operations. “The community sometimes gives incorrect information to receive more compensation or to pressure security forces into action,” Longole said. “We urge the public to provide accurate information to aid our efforts in combating livestock theft and ensuring security in the region.”
He warned that individuals providing false information would face arrest and prosecution instead of receiving support from security agencies. Longole emphasized that accurate reporting is essential for the effectiveness of security operations and the recovery of stolen property.
He reiterated that the security forces remain committed to maintaining law and order in Karamoja and protecting residents’ lives and property. Exaggeration of stolen livestock, he noted, often complicates recovery efforts as security forces attempt to locate cattle that do not exist, wasting time and resources.
