Police in Oyam District have launched investigations into the theft of 16 Central Processing Units (CPUs) from the computer library of Ngai Secondary School.
The theft was reported on Sunday morning, prompting police to visit the school and establish how the computers were stolen. Five staff members were arrested later that evening to aid investigations.
Those arrested include the school headteacher, Jannani Okot; IT teacher Tonny Olobo; and three security guards identified as Tom Ebang, Patrick Ogwal and Isaac Ogwang.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the thieves gained access to the computer library by cutting through the door frames at the back of the building. The stolen computers were among the equipment recently provided to Ngai Secondary School under a presidential pledge.
A police detective from Oyam Central Police Station, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a sniffer dog deployed at the scene followed a scent trail to the watchmen’s room, where the three security guards were stationed.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner Francis Behangana said he rushed to the school with police after receiving a report of the burglary and confirmed that the building had been forcibly entered.
Behangana urged government schools across Oyam District to strengthen security at their premises to prevent similar incidents.
By press time, police had opened a case of burglary and theft at Oyam Central Police Station. North Kyoga Police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema said he had not yet received details from the Oyam District Police Commander regarding the stolen equipment and its estimated value-URN.
