Team Uganda delivered a spirited performance at the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Canfranc-Pirineos, Spain, winning a total of six medals — one gold, three silver, and two bronze. The championships ran from September 24 to 28.

Uganda’s Martin Magengo Kiprotich claimed silver in the men’s 14-kilometre classic mountain race, finishing behind Kenya’s Ombogo Philemon Kiriago. Kiriago crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 2 minutes, and 30 seconds, while Kiprotich clocked 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 14 seconds.

Kiprotich described the course as tough but credited Uganda’s high-altitude training environment for his strong showing. “The trail was challenging, but with the preparations we had back home, I was able to give a solid performance,” he said. Uganda dominated the junior (U20) boys’ 6-kilometre race with a clean sweep of the podium.

Titus Musau struck gold, followed by Enos Chebet with silver, and Abraham Cherotich taking bronze. Musau, the younger brother of reigning world cross-country champion Jacob Kiplimo, expressed delight at his victory. “Winning here is a great experience. It gives me confidence to aim even higher in the future,” said Musau.

In the girls’ U20 category, Uganda continued its medal haul with Nancy Chekwurui clinching silver and Felista Chekwemoi settling for bronze. The 2025 edition of the championships drew elite athletes from around the globe, competing in various endurance and elevation-based trail events.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), commended the team for what he described as an outstanding performance on the world stage. “Our athletes have shown once again that Uganda is a powerhouse in mountain and trail running. We are proud of their achievements and the hard work they continue to put in,” Otuchet said.
