An unidentified Sino truck driver died in the floods that hit Mbale City Wednesday evening. The heavy rains, which began at 2 pm and continued until 8 pm, caused significant flooding in the region, particularly along major roads like the Mbale-Kumi Road and the Mbale-Tororo Road.
The River Nabuyonga and River Nasibiso both burst their banks, leading to road closures.
Traffic was completely paralyzed, with both pedestrians and vehicles unable to cross due to the flooding. Traffic Police, led by the Mbale Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Asumin Nasike, took the precautionary measure of blocking the two roads for about six hours to prevent further accidents, especially after a similar incident in August 2022, which saw over 20 people perish in floods while attempting to cross these roads.
According to Nasike, the driver of the Sino truck ignored traffic regulations and attempted to cross the flooded Mbale-Kumi Road. Unfortunately, as the truck reached the middle of the Nabuyonga Bridge, the rising waters overwhelmed the vehicle, causing it to be swept away.
The truck was found along the riverbank, but the driver’s life could not be saved. The RCC urged the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers and roads as the rains continue, to prevent further loss of life-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
