PFF chief of staff Semujju Nganda says that several secret meetings have been held to try and find common ground between people at Katonga, Gen Muntu’s ANT and Kyagulanyi’s NUP.
He says the three parties are agreed on the need to move together and campaign jointly by fronting one single presidential candidate and candidates at lower levels.
This joint presidential candidate will have to be either Kyagulanyi or Gen Mugisha Muntu of ANT with which PFF has a memorandum of undersranding already.
Semujju says that the meetings have been going on for several weeks until a few days ago when NUP asked for a break saying they needed time to first finish their difficult business of releasing their final list of flag bearers for MP positions.
Nganda told reporters at the Katonga Monday press conference that their original proposal was that Kyagulanyi and Muntu become running mates and have a joint bid for presidency against the incumbent Yoweri Museveni.
This was the common position shared by both ANT and PFF but during the discussions, NUP rejected this suggestion saying they prefer Kyagulanyi being the sole opposition candidate for presidency.
Delegation members from his NUP party were not prepared to have their principal equated to Gen Mugisha Muntu because they feel that he (Kyagulanyi) is politically too big to be a running-mate of the former army commander.
Semujju Nganda says they as PFF leaders and colleagues from ANT are prepared to accept NUP’s concerns on this issue and remain focussed on the bigger picture which is the use of the upcoming political season to overwhelm Museveni using the 2026 campaigning season.
Semujju Nganda says that he is hopeful that it will be possible in the end to agree on fronting joint opposition candidates for all the other positions downwards after agreeing on the joint presidential candidate.
That as they wait for NUP to finish its flag bearers business for MP positions, as PFF they have decided to keep getting ready with their own business by way of putting together a campaign taskforce which will be headed by Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The other members of the taskforce include Lulume Bayiga, Erias Lukwago, Betty Aol, Wasswa Birigwa, Francis Mwijukye, Roland Kaginda, Wafula Oguttu, Harold Muhindo from Kasese, Dr. Nicholas Kamara the MP Kabale municipality and Wycliff Bakandonda from Rukungiri.
Other are Rubabo county MP Naboth Namanya, Semujju Nganda, Prof Elizabeth Kyewalabye, Hoima MP Asinas Nyakato, ex-Rujumbura county MP Fred Turyamuhweza, MP Moses Kabusu from Kyamuswa in Kalangala Sese, Doreen Nyanjura, Joan Nabatanzi, ex-Mbale municipality MP Jack Wamanga Wamai, Kenneth Opoka and Okot Ojok B’leo.
