The security forces have warned Karamojong reformed warriors against being misled by politicians as the political season nears.
According to security forces, anyone who is planning to engage in criminal acts will be looking at the reformed warriors as the available force, especially those vying for political positions.
Brig Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma, the UPDF 3rd Division Commander, urged the reformed Karamojong to be wise and never to accept being misled by the politicians.
Sserunkuma noted that as the political season approaches, many leaders will try all venues to convince the voters that some of their approaches may be destructive.
Sserunkuma observed that the region is now enjoying relative peace, and the public needs to maintain the peace instead of using politics to disorganize the hard-earned peace.
He called upon the reformed warriors to guard their dignity, knowing that the future is more important than temporary gains.
The section of the leaders in the Moroto district backed the security call, asserting that there is a group of people seeking political offices who are moving around the community using the security situation to decampaign the incumbents.
John Robert Adupa, the LCIII Chairperson of Lotisan Sub County, expressed concern about the politicians who are moving around the community to decampaign their opponents using the security situation.
Adupa noted that the leaders are using the ongoing disarmament program to create favoritism from the community and lament those who are at the forefront of picking up guns from the warriors.
He also accused the security forces of taking sides with other political leaders, something he states may cause conflict among the leaders.
Adupa, without revealing their name, accused one of the security officers of telling the community not to vote back any leaders who had been in power.
Emmanuel Lokii, the LCV Councilor representing Rupa Sub County in Moroto district, noted that attaching politics to the security situation is a threat to the prevailing peace.
Lokii urged his colleagues to consider prioritizing the message of peace while campaigning rather than inciting conflict in the community. He said that the community believes so much in whatever comes from the authorities, and giving them misleading statements may jeopardize the peace.
Lokii urged the community to avoid leaders who promote hatred and only consider those working for a common goal of peace and development-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
