A Rwandan woman is in police custody in Rukiga District for allegedly strangling her husband to death following a domestic dispute. The suspect, identified as Sitafina Nyirampakaniye, 48, a resident of Rwimbogo Sub-county in Gatsibo District, Rwanda, was arrested alongside Sarah Asifiwe, a casual worker from Kagarama Village, Nyabitekyere Sub-county in Nyagatare District, Rwanda.

The two are accused of killing James Viane Malirwa, 45, a resident of Nyamatete Village in Rwimbogo Sub-county, Gatsibo District, who was also Nyirampakaniye’s husband. The incident allegedly occurred at around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday in Kamwezi Sub-county, Rukiga District.

According to Moses Rukundo, a resident, the incident followed a domestic misunderstanding between the couple that escalated into a physical fight. Rukundo said Asifiwe allegedly joined the altercation, and together the two women strangled Malirwa to death.

The Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Nelson Tumushiime, said residents quickly alerted security authorities after the incident. Police responded promptly and arrested the two suspects before they could flee back to Rwanda. The suspects are currently being held at Rukiga Police Station as investigations continue.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the deceased and his wife had a long-standing domestic dispute, which investigators believe may have contributed to the fatal incident. Tumushiime condemned all forms of domestic violence and urged couples experiencing conflicts to seek assistance from the police, Local Council leaders or the Probation Office rather than resorting to violence-URN.
