Police in Adjumani district are investigating an incident in which a vehicle belonging to Adjumani Town Council Local Council III Chairperson Lawrence Mangapi was set on fire following a post-election confrontation.
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in Dzaipi Sub-County when Mangapi, accompanied by three unidentified men, visited the home of Dulu Angel Mark, the NRM flag bearer for Adjumani East Constituency, to console him after his electoral defeat.
The visit reportedly sparked a confrontation with some of Dulu’s supporters, during which Mangapi and his companions sustained injuries. Amid the melee, Mangapi’s vehicle, registration number UBR 018F, was set ablaze. Police, led by Adjumani District Commander Harbert Masembe, intervened to restore calm.
Collins Asea, the police spokesperson for the North West Nile region, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
“We ask residents to remain calm, avoid actions that could heighten tensions, and allow us to complete our investigations into the incident,” Asea said.
According to Dulu Angel Mark, tensions increased after Mangapi’s phone received multiple calls from other local leaders, which some supporters misinterpreted.
“Mangapi and his team arrived with symbolic gifts intended to convey goodwill, but the situation escalated after he received calls from other leaders, which some supporters misinterpreted,” Dulu noted.
Mangapi, however, explained that the visit was part of a broader post-election outreach to community leaders in the district to foster dialogue and unity. He dismissed claims that his team brought an egg as a gift to Dulu.
“The visit was part of a broader post-election outreach to community leaders, including Gen. Moses Ali, Tandrupasi Patrick, Raleo Rose, and Mamawi James, aimed at fostering dialogue and unity following the elections,” Mangapi said.
In the Adjumani East County parliamentary race, Dulu Mark of the NRM was defeated, receiving 14,682 votes. Independent candidate Mamawi James won the seat with 18,149 votes, while Ecima Pascus garnered 317 votes.
