The West Nile regional Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman in Ajai Game Reserve over the weekend.
The victim has been identified as Santina Afakoru 32 years old from Terego District but resident of Loli village Okollo Sub County in Madi Okollo District.
According to reports, the victim on Saturday at 4:30 pm together with her co-wife Anteza Amviko went to collect firewood inside Ajai Wild Game Reserve.
As they started collecting the firewood, two Game Rangers, a man and woman armed with guns approached and started chasing them.
Upon citing them, the women reportedly took off but one of the rangers fired at them and a bullet caught Santina on the back and she collapsed and died on the spot.The deceased’s her co-wife Amviko reportedly escaped, without noticing she had been shot dead.
On arrival home, relatives of Santina waited for her to arrive home but in vain and on Sunday, they first moved to Lali UWA detach but were told they had nobody in custody but referred them to Okollo Police.
The relatives filed a case of disappeared person at Okollo Police who later mounted a search leading to the discovery of the body of Santina inside Ajai Game Reserve on Sunday.
Josephine Angucia, the Spokesperson for West Nile Police confirmed the incident and said the police at Okollo Station launched a search in the game reserve only to find the body of Santina lying on her face in a pool of blood and covered with a black polythene bag.
Angucia added that upon checking the body, bullet wounds were found on her back suggesting she was shot at, adding that the body was taken to Nebbi General Hospital for postmortem as inquiries and search for the killers continue. A case of murder has been registered under Madi Okollo CRB 148/2026 as investigations continue.
Efforts to get a comment from officials Uganda Wildlife Authority Lali detach in Ajai Game Reserve failed as known phone contacts were not available.
Since the introduction of wildlife animals in Ajai game reserve more than two years ago, leaders and other stakeholders in Madi Okollo district have been advocating for continuous sensitization to minimize on human-animal conflicts and harmonious existence between UWA and the locals-URN.
