Police in Kitagwenda District have shot dead a 59-year-old man during an attempted arrest in Nyabbani Sub-county.

The deceased has been identified as Ferezian Bagubwa, a resident of Rwenkubebe A village in Nyabbani Subcounty Kitagwenda District.

The incident happened on Sunday morning at around 10:00am near Kikaritusi Trading Centre, when police officers from Nyabbani Police Post went to arrest Bagubwa over allegations of burning property belonging to his daughter.

According to his first wife Ustine Businge Bagubwa, they heard gunshots and rushed to the scene where they found the deceased lying dead after being shot by police officers.

Ernest Nkurunungi the LC 1 Chairperson of Rwenkubebe village says that the matter stemmed from a domestic violence dispute.

Nkurunungi revealed that Bagubwa was accused of burning his daughter’s property comprising a shop after accusing her of returning to her husband, from whom she had separated, without his consent.

He explained that the deceased and the sons from his second wife had earlier reported the matter to his office, but he referred them to police since his office does not handle criminal cases.

Nkurunungi added that the deceased and some of his sons resisted arrest and attempted to escape, leading to a confrontation with the officers which prompted the police to open fire.

Alex Nuwamanya the Officer in Charge of Kitagwenda Police Station, confirmed the incident and called for calm among residents and family members as investigations continue.

The body of the deceased was taken to Ntara Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination as investigations into the incident are ongoing.
