Police in Obongi District are hunting for a group of armed men suspected of robbing and raping a woman at Konyokonyo Trading Centre along the Yumbe-Moyo Road. The incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, as the victim, a South Sudanese national, was returning home from the trading centre.

Collins Asea, the North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said the woman was attacked by two armed men who were allegedly carrying SMG rifles. “The victim was returning home from Konyokonyo Centre when she was ambushed by two armed suspects wielding SMG rifles. The assailants forcibly took her handbag containing 98,000 Ugandan shillings and seized her mobile phone. They then coerced her into revealing her mobile money PIN, resulting in a transfer of 700,000 Ugandan shillings to an unknown MTN number,” Asea said.

Asea added that the suspects later dragged the woman to a maize garden about 100 metres from the road, where they allegedly assaulted and raped her. After the attack, the suspects reportedly damaged her mobile phone and abandoned it about 20 metres from the scene before fleeing. Police said a report of armed robbery and sexual assault was filed at Morobi Police Post under reference number SD 02/01/09/2026.

Officers from Morobi and Itula Police Stations responded to the scene and recovered several items, including the damaged mobile phone, a small brown bag, an SMG rifle cartridge, a hammer, a stick and a knife. However, the suspects had already fled, and their whereabouts remain unknown.

According to Asea, preliminary investigations indicate that several other people were robbed in the Morobi area the previous evening, allegedly by the same group of assailants. Police believe the suspects were moving on foot and disappeared into an unknown location after the attacks. Preliminary investigations further indicate that the group comprised six individuals operating in three teams.

Police have appealed for calm among residents and urged anyone with information that could help identify or locate the suspects to report to the nearest police station as the hunt continues-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
