Police in the Albertine region have arrested 93 suspects during a security operation targeting crime hotspots in Kagadi and Kakumiro districts. According to the Albertine South Regional Police spokesperson,  Julius Allan Hakiza, the operation was conducted on Thursday as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime and enhance public safety across the region.

Hakiza said 80 suspects were arrested in Igayaza Town Council, Kakumiro District, while 13 suspected drug dealers were apprehended in Rugashali Town Council, Kagadi District.

The operation targeted individuals suspected of involvement in various criminal activities, particularly the sale and distribution of narcotic drugs, which authorities say remain a growing concern in the region.

All suspects are currently being held at their respective district police stations pending investigations. Hakiza explained that the verification process will be carried out jointly by local security and administrative structures, including Gombolola Internal Security Officers (GISOs), Local Council I chairpersons, the Police, and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

He noted that the exercise will help establish the identities of the suspects and determine whether they are linked to criminal activities or were mistakenly arrested during the operation. Police have pledged to continue similar operations across the Albertine region as part of broader efforts to strengthen security and keep communities safe from criminal elements-URN.
