Ruth Nankabirwa, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, has asked Ugandans to be on the lookout against politicians who are promising to extend electricity to their areas.
Nankabirwa said after elections, some politicians abandon the poles without a power connection, and others remove them and disappear. She said that the mandate of electricity extension lies with the government and its implementing partners through a plan passed through a budget.
Nankabirwa also warned against power brokers who extort money to sell poles, meter boxes, and other accessories without knowledge of the distributor.
Nankabirwa said the government is currently engaged in scaling up power extension targeting key infrastructure installation across the sub-counties, but this may take time due to limited resources.
Nankabirwa said this will make pledges to extend power in the villages of Kasangombe and Kapeeka sub-county, which are not yet connected national grid.
At least 91 villages in Nakaseke South constituency are not yet connected to power.
As a result, Charles Basajjassubi Nsereko, the National Resistance Member of Parliament Candidate, appealed to the Minister asking that the villages be considered and connected to the national grid.
Dan Kuteesa Tomusange, the Vice Chairperson of Kasangombe sub-county, said that the absence of power has crippled service delivery and retarded the development of the village.
Minister Nankabirwa pledged that the villages will be connected after the assessment by the Ministry of Energy is done.
