The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has further remanded National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter Waiswa Mufumbiro, who is facing charges of inciting party supporters to murder a security personnel.

Mufumbiro appeared in court on Wednesday before Magistrate Andrew Katurubuki to check on the progress of police investigations.

Through his lawyers, he asked for temporary release on humanitarian grounds, citing the poor health of his wife, who requires his care.

However, Magistrate Katurubuki said he lacked the authority to grant the request, explaining that only the trial magistrate—who is currently on leave—has the power to order his release.

The court directed prosecutors to expedite the investigations. As a result, Mufumbiro was further remanded until January 6, 2026, as inquiries continue.

The 39-year-old, who is an aspirant for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat on the NUP ticket, is accused of inciting supporters in Kampala to attack and kill security personnel. He faces two criminal charges, including incitement to commit an offence under Section 21(1) of the Penal Code Act.

Prosecutors allege that on September 4, 2025, within Kampala, Mufumbiro incited NUP supporters to engage in violent acts, including murder, against security personnel. He denied the charges.

Mufumbiro is also facing charges before the Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya in connection with an alleged unauthorised military-style parade held at the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule in February 2025. He was first remanded in that case in September 2025.

Mufumbiro is scheduled to appear before the Kawempe court on December 22, 2025, for a ruling on his application for mandatory release, after spending more than 60 days on remand without trial.

Other accused persons in the Kawempe case include Edward Ssebuufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, Kivumbi Achileo, Tasi Calvin alias Bobi Giant, Sserunkuma Edwin alias Eddy King Kabejja, Lukenge Sharif, Nyanzi Yasin, Kaweesi Tonny, Saudah Madaada, Kaija Doreen, and Olivia Lutaaya.

They face charges of unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and wearing uniforms resembling those of security forces. The prosecution alleges the offences were committed during the February 12, 2025, incident at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule.

Some of the accused are also facing separate robbery-related charges before the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court, where they are accused of robbing mourners and journalists of mobile phones and cash during a funeral last year. All the accused denied the charges, and several bail applications have been rejected.
