The move by Muwanga Kivumbi as deputy president to expel MPs who are not adequately loyal to Kavule has created more problems for NUP party than opportunities. Muwanga wants several MPs to apologize within 30 days or else get replaced by people who are younger and more loyal to Kyagulanyi.
However, inside Kavule a group of more liberal-minded actors has emerged and they have written a dossier showing the dangers of Muwanga’s extremist tendencies. They have expressed fear that fighting with incumbent MPs is going to create more cracks and faultlines inside Kyagulanyi’s already fractured party and all this will favor Museveni and his NRM.
The internal dossier highlights constituencies which NRM could win back very easily in Buganda because of Muwanga Kivumbi’s divisive leadership.
In several constituencies, the dossier shows that an NRM candidate could poll as little as 40% of the votes cast and still win as the rest of Kyagulanyi-confessing candidates share the remaining 60%.
The document shows that what each of the NUP-expelled incumbent has to do is to remain in race and play the role of spoiler in favor of the ruling NRM of Museveni.
Instead of listening to them and discussing what they are saying, insiders say, the NUP top leadership at Kavule has responded by sidelining their own secretariat staff who authored the document after undertaking a close study of the Buganda electoral map as was directed by Kyagulanyi himself who even gave them facilitation for the job.
