President Yoweri Museveni has sent condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Hassan, describing his death as a “great loss” to the Tanzanian leader and her family. In a condolence message, Museveni said he received the news of Hafidh’s death with “a lot of sadness” and conveyed condolences on behalf of the people of Uganda, his family and himself to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.

“It was with a lot of sadness that I received the bad news of the death of your dear husband, Mr. Hafidh Hassan,” Museveni said. “I extend the most heartfelt condolences from the people of Uganda and from my family and myself to Your Excellency, your family and the People of Tanzania.”

Museveni said he had witnessed President Samia’s commitment to Tanzania and Africa since he first knew her as Vice-President of Tanzania and later as President. “Ever since I started knowing you as Vice-President of the United Republic of Tanzania and now as President, I have witnessed your love for your country and Africa and your dedication,” he said.

He also highlighted several projects and areas of cooperation between Uganda and Tanzania, including trade, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, the Murongo-Kyikagate mini-hydro station, roads in Tanzania, the Masaka-Bukoba transmission line and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

“We have done a lot together in the areas of trade, the East African Oil Pipeline, the Murongo-Kyikagate mini-hydro station, the tarmac roads on the side of Tanzania, the transmission line from Masaka-Bukoba, the SGR to Isaka and, eventually, to Uganda and beyond, to mention just some,” Museveni said.

The Ugandan president said President Samia’s dedication to her country was likely supported by her late husband and family. “The dedication you show must have been supported by your dear husband and family,” he said, adding that he had met Samia’s son, Abdul, several times.
