After enduring the deplorable state of the Nebbi–Goli road for more than 20 years, residents of Nebbi and the entire West Nile region have reason to smile following President Yoweri Museveni’s pledge to finally tarmac the long-awaited route.
While on his campaign trail in Nebbi on Saturday, President Museveni, who is also the NRM presidential candidate, was strongly reminded by local leaders about the suffering the people of Alur and the wider West Nile region have endured due to the poor state of the road to Goli.
The 21-kilometer Nebbi–Goli Customs Road is one of the busiest routes for goods in transit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and also connects to the Paidha–Logiri–Vurra Customs route.
Retired Archbishop Luke Orombi of the Church of Uganda reminded President Museveni that the people of Nebbi and Alur have consistently voted for him but continue to miss out on key infrastructural developments, particularly road improvement projects.
Similarly, John Kermundu, the NRM Chairman for Nebbi District, reiterated the leaders’ call to upgrade the Nebbi–Goli–Zombo–Arua road, saying that fulfilling such pledges would make it easier to mobilize support for the NRM in the greater Nebbi area.
Without giving a specific timeline, President Museveni, in his response, yielded to the leaders’ demands and confirmed that the Nebbi–Goli road would soon be tarmacked. He, however, cautioned citizens against merely demanding tarmac roads if they are not using them productively to improve their household incomes and fight poverty.
President Museveni is currently in the West Nile region to campaign for re-election for a seventh term under the NRM ticket, amid growing demands for the fulfillment of pledges made over the past decade.
