Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has earned international recognition after its AgriChain team secured second place at the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 Global Final held in Shenzhen, China, highlighting the institution’s growing strength in technological innovation.
The Fort Portal Tourism City-based university competed against top student innovators from universities across the world, with the MMU team emerging among the best performers in the global contest. The AgriChain team comprised Computer Science students Aaron Masendi, Elvis Oko, and Wasswa Atibu from the Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation (FOSTI).
Their project impressed judges with its technical depth and innovation, earning them second prize in one of the world’s most competitive student ICT innovation platforms. The competition journey began in December last year, progressing through national and continental stages before reaching the global final in China. Alinaitwe Mukonyenzi, the team’s mentor, said the achievement reflects MMU’s commitment to nurturing innovation and problem-solving skills among students.
Team member Aaron Masendi said the recognition proved that Ugandan students are capable of competing at the highest global level. “This achievement belongs to MMU and everyone who supported us,” he said. Another team member, Elvis Oko, said the platform demonstrated the relevance of their work beyond Uganda’s borders.
“Winning second prize among the best student innovators worldwide proves that what we do at MMU matters beyond Uganda,” he noted. The students credited the university and their mentor for consistent support throughout the competition, expressing hope that their success will inspire other students across the country to pursue innovation and excellence.
Mukonyenzi praised the team’s dedication, saying their hard work and belief in their vision were key to the achievement. The Huawei ICT Competition is an annual global programme that brings together university students to apply ICT skills in solving real-world challenges.
