A man in his early 30s, Daudi Tumushabe, was on Wednesday evening sentenced to 23 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to escaping from Kabale Central Police Station. The prosecution told the court that on October 10, 2025, at around 2:00 a.m., Tumushabe was intercepted by security authorities while on patrol in Kabale Municipality, following reports of panga-wielding men killing and robbing residents.
Tumushabe was found armed with a deadly weapon and taken to Kabale Central Police Station for detention. According to court records, as he was being led to the cells, Tumushabe overpowered a police officer, climbed out of the rear of the station, and fled. He was subsequently re-arrested by officers.
Appearing before the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Tumushabe was charged with escaping from lawful detention. In his defense, he pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness. Chief Magistrate Derrick Byamugisha noted that Tumushabe had not wasted the court’s time but emphasized the need for deterrence due to rising cases of theft and robbery involving pangas in Kabale, which have led to loss of life.
“Considering the gravity of the offenses in the area, the offender needs to be deterred from society,” Byamugisha said, sentencing Tumushabe to 23 months’ imprisonment. The magistrate also advised Tumushabe that he could appeal the sentence within 14 days if dissatisfied with the ruling.
