Security personnel have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly attempting to bribe his way into the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) during a recruitment exercise at Kabale Stadium in Kabale District.
The suspect, identified as Niwandinda Esau, a resident of Nyakarambi village, Birambo parish, Maziba Sub-county in Kabale District, was arrested on Wednesday after reportedly offering a bribe of one million Uganda shillings in an attempt to secure recruitment into the army.
According to Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, the Public Information Officer for the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division, Esau’s actions constitute a criminal offence.
“Such acts are criminal and punishable by the laws of Uganda. Those who think they can bribe their way into the UPDF are daydreaming. Get warned, we will get you,” Maj. Tabaro says in a statement issued shortly after the arrest.
Tabaro says investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities have confirmed that the suspect will be charged.
The exercise that started from the Kigezi region on Tuesday targets 1,447 recruits from the Western region. Applicants who pass both the physical and medical tests will be transported to the training wing in Kaweweta, Nakaseke District-URN.
