Authorities at Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) have cautioned medical interns against abusing drugs and insubordination during their internship at the hospital.

The warning was sounded by the Hospital’s Senior Executive Consultant (SEC) Dr. Andrew Odur during the induction and orientation of the new cohort of medical interns for the 2026/2027 internship program. The hospital has welcomed a total of 40 interns, comprising medical doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

Dr. Odur argued that drugs will not only affect their mental wellbeing but also professionalism. Adding that the Ministry of Health is paying keen attention to such acts.

He urged the interns to approach their work with seriousness and dedication, and not engage in unethical practices, particularly the extortion of money from patients and their caregivers and urged them to maintain integrity in all their professional dealings.

According to Odur, LRRH is the best facility that will provide the interns with all learning opportunities, which only requires remaining focused, commitment, and willingness to learn.

Meanwhile, Beatrice Akello, the Senior Principal Nursing Officer, encouraged the interns to develop effective communication skills and treat patients and caregivers with respect and dignity, and emphasized the proper and peaceful handover of patients between health workers and shifts.

She also urged the interns to ensure a clean and safe healthcare environment. She reminded the interns that effective communication, teamwork and continuity of care are essential components of quality healthcare delivery.
