Local leaders in Central Division of Kasese Municipality have raised concerns over a sharp increase in pupil absenteeism barely three weeks into the first term, warning that the trend threatens the future of children in the area. According to the LC III Chairperson of Central Division, Safari Martin, more than 703 pupils have not reported to school since the term began.
He noted that many children are still being kept in villages by their parents to engage in domestic work and other activities instead of returning to class. Martin also expressed worry over the growing number of street children and hawkers in Kasese town, saying the situation is disrupting order and negatively affecting the image of the municipality, especially among tourists visiting the area.
He appealed to parents to prioritise their children’s education, urging them to support schooling efforts to secure a better future for the young generation. Joy Masika, the Kamaiba Ward Female Councilor, echoed the call, emphasising the need for proper parenting and guidance if children are to succeed academically. She urged families to take full responsibility for ensuring that school-going children attend classes consistently.
Jockus Bijwanga, Councillor for Nyakabingo II Ward, raised alarm over the increasing number of young boda boda riders in Kasese. He observed that many school-age boys are abandoning their studies to join the motorcycle transport business, a move he said could limit their long-term opportunities.
Erisa Muhindo, Head Teacher of Base Camp Primary School, underscored the need for a collective approach in addressing the challenge. He called on parents, schools, and local leaders to work together to sensitise communities on the value of education and the risks associated with child labour and school dropout.
The leaders are now calling for joint efforts to enforce school attendance, curb child labour, and prevent school-going children from turning to street vending and boda boda riding at the expense of their education.
