After weeks of intense efforts to combat a cholera outbreak, Lamwo District has made significant progress, with no new cases reported in Agoro Sub-county for 18 consecutive days.

According to Dr. Denis Ocula Omoya, the Lamwo District Health Officer, the district has now met the World Health Organization’s (WHO) criteria for declaring a cholera-free zone, which requires two consecutive incubation periods (10 days each) without any new cases.

“We are now waiting for the official declaration from the Ministry of Health that Lamwo District is free of cholera,” Dr. Ocula said during the decommissioning of the Lamwo District Cholera Taskforce at Agoro Sub-county headquarters on Thursday. The cholera outbreak, which was first reported in Agoro Sub-county on January 5, 2025, resulted in 106 confirmed cases and one community death between January 5 and March 17, 2025.

Lamwo Resident District Commissioner Williams Komakech, who also chaired the Cholera District Taskforce, commended the medical teams, partners, and local leaders for their relentless efforts in containing the outbreak. “We have won the war, but the battle is not yet over,” Komakech said.

“We must remain vigilant and continue working together to prevent future outbreaks.” He noted that the decommissioning of the Cholera Taskforce is a significant milestone, but district officials remain cautious as they await the Ministry of Health’s final declaration.

Dr. Omoya reaffirmed that once the district is officially declared cholera-free, it will mark the success of their collective efforts. However, he emphasized the need for continued vigilance to prevent a resurgence.

Lamwo District Secretary for Health, Education, and Community-Based Services, Erwondo Peter Fred, warned that despite the absence of new cases, the community must remain alert. “Agoro Sub-county lies along the South Sudan border, where we suspect the case might have originated. We must continue prioritizing hygiene and surveillance to prevent any new infections,” he said.

Lamwo District remains on high alert as health officials closely monitor the situation, ensuring that preventive measures remain in place-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
