Kyambogo University Council members have been called upon to maintain the highest standards of integrity and honesty in the management of council affairs. Justice Lawrence Tweyanze emphasized these principles during the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed council members.
Citing Section 38(1) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, Justice Tweyanze noted that the University Council’s composition reflects diverse constituencies, tasked with ensuring effective governance. He stressed that members must practice collective responsibility and remain accountable for all council decisions.
Justice Tweyanze further cautioned members against leaking sensitive council information or resolutions without the chairperson’s consent.
The current 6th University Council comprises 17 members, with notable representatives including Robert Bellarmine Okudi from the Ministry of Higher Education, Francis Muhumuza from the Ministry of Finance, and Dr. Sam Lutalo-Kiingi, representing staff with disabilities.
However, critical vacancies remain. Three public representatives, one representative from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), one Senate member, and two student representatives are yet to be appointed. Professor Eli Katunguka, Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, attributed the absence of student representatives to disruptions in student elections, which were suspended due to mismanagement.
He assured stakeholders that structured student leadership would be instituted soon, enabling proper representation on the council. The Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of filling the council’s vacancies to ensure balanced and inclusive decision-making -URN.
