Nicholas Kiiza, the male Councillor representing workers for Kikuube district is in custody at the Hoima Central police station for alleged extortion from job seekers. Kiiza was picked up after several complaints had been lodged against him for extortion after he allegedly received money from various job seekers both in Hoima and Kikuube districts.
This was after he promised to help them secure employment opportunities with the two District Local Governments. He reportedly extorted between shillings 6m and 10million from each individual seeking employment in the two districts.
When the said promised jobs did not materialise, the complainants reported the matter to police, prompting an investigation and the arrest of the councillor.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson has confirmed the arrest and detention of the suspect adding that several other people have since come forward with similar complaints.
“It is true we picked up the male Councilor representing workers in Kikuube District,” Hakiza said. “He is currently being detained at Hoima Central Police Station. This was after several complaints of extortion had been put against him by job seekers.”
Hakiza explained that police were receiving more complaints from people who allegedly lost money after being promised jobs by the suspect. He says, Police have reportedly opened inquiries into allegations of extortion, bribery and obtaining money by false pretences adding that Kiiza would be taken to court once investigations are complete.
Hakiza further noted that several other district officials and politicians are being investigated over similar allegations involving job seeker. Kiiza’s arrest and detention comes barely a week, after Joel Manyireki, the Hoima District Principal Human Resource Officer, was also arrested for allegedly extorting Shs15 million from a health worker seeking employment in the district.
He was arrested last week in Hoima City and taken to Hoima Central Police Station, where he was detained as investigations continue.
According to police, Munyangireki allegedly received the money from a job seeker after promising to help him secure employment with the Hoima District Local Government. When the promised job did not materialise, the complainant reported the matter to police, prompting an investigation and the arrest of the human resource officer.
In April 2026, police in Hoima City arrested Hoima LCV Vice Chairperson Hellen Mulumba over allegations of extorting Shs16.5 million from a job seeker. She allegedly received it after promising to help a youth secure employment in the district, but the promised job did not materialise.
In July 2024, Vincent Alpha Opio, then Kikuube LCV Vice Chairperson, was arrested over allegations that he obtained Shs1.5 million from a job applicant after promising to help him secure a district job. The applicant, identified as Derick Musabiire, reportedly reported the matter after the promised employment did not materialise.
In 2022, several officials in Kikuube District were also investigated over alleged extortion and corruption linked to recruitment. At the time, reports indicated that hundreds of job seekers had lost money after being promised positions that were never secured.
Applicants were reportedly asked to pay between Shs500,000 and Shs1 million for positions in various district departments, with some later discovering that their names had not even appeared on official shortlists.
