Old students from Kiira College Butiki in Jinja City are breathing new life into the glory of traditional schools by engaging in corporate sporting activities. Through their annual Butiki League, alumni from various schools, including Trinity College Nabingo, Jinja College, Nyakashura School, and Busoga College Mwiri, have come together to revive the once vibrant legacy of these schools.

The league organizes monthly match days from April to November each year, with teams of seven players each. The climax of this year’s season will be held at the Dams Waters Grounds in Jinja City, where all 20 participating teams will gather to wrap up the season.

Julius Ndikyo, the legal advisor of the league, highlighted that the sporting activities have helped mobilize old students across different alumni associations to work together on improving their former schools. Ndikyo noted that these efforts have led to significant changes, such as the replacement of old asbestos roofing with iron sheets, and the creation of fundraising models that allow alumni to directly contribute to the infrastructural development of their schools.

On a lighter note, Okello Otik, the vice-chairperson of the Butiki League, shared that each team consists of seven players, including one female member. Players are encouraged to name their teams based on their school memories, such as notable teachers, school slogans, or local communities. This approach fosters a deep emotional connection to their former schools, reminding them of the formative experiences that shaped their lives.

The league has also partnered with Kiri Bottling Company to support environmental sustainability in Jinja City. As part of a greening campaign, 1,000 fruit trees—mangoes, oranges, avocados, and more—will be planted in various zones around the city.

These trees will be distributed to members of the public who are interested in nurturing them, with surplus trees being planted at Kiira College Butiki grounds, Jinja Police Barracks, Jinja City Hall Gardens, Busoga Square Gardens, and Rippon Gardens.
