The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction and the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) have joined forces to bolster support for Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate in the Kawempe North parliamentary by-elections.
On Monday evening, National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders, led by Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of Opposition in Parliament, joined forces with Erias Lukwago, Waswa Birigwa, and Helod Kaija from the FDC Katonga faction at Luyimbazi’s rally held at Kanyanya playground.
The campaign also saw representatives from the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), including former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Winnie Kizza and Nathan Kaluhanga, lend their support to the NUP candidate.
Addressing thousands of NUP supporters, Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, expressed his delight at the party’s campaign rally for Nalukoola. He warmly welcomed the presence of other opposition forces who share NUP’s vision for a better Uganda, emphasizing the importance of unity in driving meaningful change.
“We, as the true opposition forces advocating for change in Uganda, have united behind a single candidate, Nalukoola, in the Kawempe By-Election. I extend my warmest welcome and gratitude to Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and his team from Katonga, as well as Madam Winnie Kiiza and her team from ANT. This unity is a testament to the possibility of a broader coalition, paving the way for joint candidates in the 2026 General Election across the country,” Ssenyonyi said.
The NUP’s Vice President for Buganda Region, Muwanga Kivumbi, called on the Kawempe North electorates not to be intimidated by security deployments on Election Day but to come out in big numbers and cast their vote.
“I want to tell you to come out on Thursday and vote for Nalukoola. We want to give them a knockout punch, and they have to know that the Museveni regime is not welcome in Kawempe. You all have to know that this by-election is only between NRM and NUP,” Muwanga Kivumbi said.
Erias Lukwago, the Kampala Lord Mayor, cautioned the Kawempe North electorates that the upcoming by-election is not just any ordinary election, but a fierce battle. According to Lukwago, President Museveni’s regime is desperate to prove its popularity, which Lukwago claims is a false narrative.
Lukwago expressed his confidence in Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola’s ability to make a significant impact in parliament. According to Lukwago, Nalukoola will be a key player in the fight for accountability, particularly when it comes to the use of taxpayer money and opposing oppressive laws, including a proposed law that would mandate military courts to try civilians.
“This is a serious war we’re in now. You have seen how we knocked down the general court martial, but Mr. Museveni and his people are planning and doing everything possible to bring it back in parliament. We have to have resilient people in parliament who will stand their ground and fight. That’s why we need Nalukoola, because he is a true fighter,” Lukwago said.
Nalukoola and the NUP are expected to campaign in Bwaise at the New Bubajjwe playground later today for his final campaign rally. NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, is expected to be the chief guest. Meanwhile, President Museveni will be the chief guest at the Kawempe Muslim Playground for the final campaign rally of NRM’s candidate, Faridah Nambi-URN.
