Police in Katakwi Central Police Station, East Kyoga Region, have arrested a 19-year-old mother from Ocorimongin Town Board, Katakwi Sub-County, following the death of her six-month-old baby boy, who was dumped into a toilet. The arrest comes after a week-long investigation into the incident, which has shocked the local community.
On the morning of Tuesday, February 2, 2026, concerned citizens heard the baby’s cries and discovered him in the latrine. They alerted the local council chairperson, who promptly reported the case to the police.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Haji Ibrahim Saiga, Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga Region, confirmed that the suspect, identified as Esther Adeke, is currently being held at Katakwi CPS awaiting court action. Last week, police registered a case of rash and neglect under CRB 60/2026 after the child succumbed to his injuries.
Saiga praised residents for their vigilance and cooperation, which aided in the arrest. He emphasized that the suspect will be brought to court to face charges.
Police have highlighted Section 227 of the Penal Code, which covers “rash and neglect” acts, carrying penalties of up to seven years in prison, with particular focus on child safety, medical negligence, and public protection. Rash and neglect refers to criminal liability arising from reckless actions, inaction, or failure to perform a duty that results in harm to others, particularly minors.
